A Birth And A Funeral, Performance, Mixed Media, 2024, BETULA PAPYRIFERA (b. 1982 - 2023)
A performance involving various agents, including water, fungi, bacteria, and invertebrates, over a period of approximately two years. During this time, the space will transform into a graveyard, burying both leaves and some of the agents. It will also become a birthplace, where new life will emerge from the decaying matter.
2.
Compost, Performance, Mixed Media, 2024, BREDAL(b. 1997) ,MANY MORE (b. unknown)
The human and non-human artists work side by side, both acting as decomposing agents.
3.
Look Closer 1, Performance, Mixed media, 2024, ARANEUS DIADEMATUS (b. 2024)
A show put up by a common garden spider (Araneus Diadematus), feeding on a range of other decomposition agents.
4.
Look Closer 2, Performance, Mixed Media, 2024, VARIOUS ARTISTS
A performance by an array of decomposition agents: fungi, ants, beetles, bacteria, and mites actively decomposing the birch branches and each other. Look closer, and you might see them in action.
5.
Paper, Performance, Mixed media, 2024 - 2084, BETULA PAPYRIFERA (b. 1990 - 2021 )
The paper is lifted from the gallery floor in a conscious effort to slow down decay by making it less accessible to decomposition agents (mainly fungi).
The wood pedestal presents the paper for the viewer.
6.
Rock, Rock, Hemp rope, 2024, BREDAL (b. 1997), RAVLO-LEIRA(b. 1998)
A rock hangs from a hemp rope. In just a couple of weeks, the rope will rot away due to exposure to water, and the rock will find its new resting place on the ground. This is a reference to the fate that will also befall each frame in the gallery.
7.
Use Your Head, Performance, Mixed media, 2024, BETULA PAPYRIFERA (b. 1974 - 2022)
The main part of the art piece is positioned directly below the frame, inviting viewers to poke their heads through to see it properly. This setup references how the crucial elements of the Decomposition Gallery are often right by your feet.
8.
Look Up, Performance, Mixed media, 2024, -BETULA PAPYRIFERA (Est. 1982 )
An ongoing performance estimated to last over the next forty years. The artist will shed its leaves more frequently during certain periods and randomly during others, allowing them to reach the decomposition agents on the gallery floor.
9.
A New Perspective, Birch branches, Hemp rope, 2024, BREDAL (b. 1997), RAVLO-LEIRA(b. 1998)
A sculpture made of previous placeholder frames for the Decomposition Gallery is placed on the gallery floor. The sculpture will evolve as it is exposed to the elements and decomposition agents
10.
Fruiting Body, Performance, 2024, CALOCYBE GAMBOSA (b. unknown )
This fruiting body is a example of an annual performance by the artist. This indicates the time of the year when the Calocybe gambosa asserst its influence over the surrounding area by spreading its genes. The location is somewhere where temperature, moisture, light and nutrients are sufficent.
Have fun!
